Escape Makers | Escape Mail | Case Study

 

PART 1 : The Problem

The Libin Institute at the University of Calgary, along with Alberta Health Services, were faced with the same challenge everyone else was: how do you engage people over teleconference? COVID-19 had forced them to run their program introduction day remotely, and knowing it would be a challenge to engage everyone, they approached Escape Makers. “Can you help us take our teleconference to the next level?”


PART 2 : The Solution

So we sat down (remotely!) with the folks at the University of Calgary and heard their needs. We also noted their outcomes, and we designed an experience that was both online and in-person. Each student was to get mailed a package, which would contain elements needed to solve puzzles. Part of the information was online and part of it was in person, plus there would be incentive to interact with other group members to solve the puzzles more quickly. We would deliver the physical experience prior to launch and host the digital portion on our website. The result?


PART 3: The Results

Students were both excited and mystified. What was this game? Many had never played anything like it. Based on the success of #escapemail, the product required students to search for answers on the University of Calgary’s website, enter them in, and collaborate with their peers. The group that finished their answers the fastest overlaid the documents on each other to reveal the answer: COLLABORATION. (To see this demonstrated watch the video below at the 0:42 mark). Even though only 1 team was the “winner”, every single post-survey respondent said they enjoyed the game and it enhanced their experience of the event.
